It later turns out that Purcell's attorney, Dena Carter, set the murder in motion by telling Purcell when and where Vorgitch would be, knowing that Purcell was intent on killing him. Shortly afterward, Vorgitch is shot and killed by Robert Purcell, father of one of the murdered children, as he is being taken to trial. He is then housed in a maximum security prison to prevent him from escaping again. At his arraignment, he threatens the presiding judge and ADA Connie Rubirosa. Vorgitch refuses to plead guilty, believing that, because his death sentence had been overturned, the authorities could not sentence him to die once again. Green tackles him and puts him under arrest. When a truck backfires nearby, Vorgitch thinks the police are shooting at him and kills four children. Vorgitch runs into an elementary school and holds a classroom full of children hostage. He then murders a former cellmate and steals his gun.Ī citywide manhunt ensues, in which NYPD detective Ed Green finds Vogitch and chases him. In 2006, Vorgitch escapes from prison, killing two guards in the process. After the death penalty was declared unconstitutional in New York City, Vorgitch's sentence was commuted to life in prison with no parole. He was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to death. (He also has an unnamed son.) Leon already had a long record of committing violent felonies when, in 1997, he killed five people while robbing a fast food restaurant. Vorgitch is a career criminal who comes from a family of criminals, including his mother Delores and brother Carl.
